The techniques made by the two in the various fields of cryptography, technology, programming, etc. are passed down from generation to generation, and each member specializes in at least one or another of these fields. The Family is everywhere, right under everyone's noses, aiding whatever group or faction requires their assistance, and pulling strings in the large sphere of influence that their empire commands. To say their work is unnecessary would be a blatant lie--many conflicts have been averted thanks to the Family's help, and many wars have gone one step closer to ending thanks to them--and so quite a deal of pressure falls onto their shoulders, day after day. This pressure is nothing compared to the Number's pressure, though--but this raises a question: who is the Number? Seven is, as given by his name, a member of the Family's seventh generation. Specifically, he is the oldest of it, and thus since his conception in the womb, his future has been planned for him down to every last detail. A Number is simply what Seven is: the fortunate (or unfortunate?) firstborn of a generation, given a single number for a name instead of a first and last like everyone else. It is the Number that learns every trick in the books of Babbage and Lovelace, including the ones they only kept in their minds and transferred only through word of mouth, and it is only the Number who is capable of passing these techniques on to the next Number down the line and to keep them alive. Nobody else is aware. While Seven's been treated like royalty in the Family, able to get whatever he wanted whenever he wanted, he never enjoyed it. All he's ever wanted was to be normal, to be left to his own devices and to find his own path. He'll admit: the years spent learning the trade from his grandfather, Six, were the best years of his life. Still, when Six died, Seven's passion for code-breaking began to feel forced, and he realized that if he had a choice, he'd rather crack codes to secrets by himself instead of obligation. The Family in itself is based somewhere in the Atlantic, and Seven only lives in Oregon because he was born in it. His mother, a woman who disappeared shortly after giving birth to Seven, left him in the care of his father--a man she met while traveling, and who meant close to nothing to her. His father, a man named Vincent, was of course a member of the Family based in Gravity Falls due to strange occurrences; he was a bit of a 'watchful protector', if you will. However, it was this job that resulted in his death, and when Seven was three years old he realized one evening that his father wouldn't be coming home. This was where Six stepped in, moving into Seven's life and deciding that training was to begin as soon as possible. Though he was also compassionate and kind towards his grandson, Six was a stern man, and anything less than perfection on Seven's end would result in him having to repeat the process for as many times as was required. It was the little things that mattered, in the end: Seven's memories of Six are mostly fond ones, and everyday he wishes the man were still with him. Alas, mortality is a fickle thing, and not even the Family can change that. The only reason Seven remains in Gravity Falls is because his first job is to find out what murdered his father. It's his first solo assignment--the first without back-up, without outside help, without the Family guiding him when he needs help--and aside from that, a watchful eye over the strange settlement is something the Family needs. His father's findings had given the idea of supernatural creatures, and a group based on logic refuses to accept it. Seven himself is particularly... half-believing, at best, but so long as he doesn't have any evidence of his own (and not borrowed from his father's extensive research), then supernatural occurrences does not hold ground. In the end, though, sometimes all he wants to do is botch this whole thing on purpose and run away, because once the Family gets a hold on you, they'll never let go. And the thought of never making his own choices terrifies him more than he cares to admit. SEVEN looks similar to HOUTAROU OREKI of HYOUKA THIS CHARACTER IS PLAYED BY *BRANDON |
